ST. WINIFRED'S BRANSCOMBE
Central to the active life of the village the church maintains strong links with the Church of
England primary school.
The nave is mainly Norman and is overlooked by the Millennium cross.
Enlargements during the 13th and 14th centuries included the transepts,
extended nave and the chancel. The fine oak gallery is Elizabethan.
The 1660 chancel screen evokes the style of a Devon farm parlour. The three
tier pulpit is rare in Devon. The tomb of Joan Wadham (died 1583) is in
the North transept. Her son Nicholas founded Wadham College, Oxford.
The Norman tower is four-square with slit belfry openings. It contains a
priest's chamber with a small window overlooking the altar.
